The contents of a bottle of zooplankton are extremely small, often smaller than the naked eye can see but is hugely important for all sea creatures, corals feed on these microscopic animals in order to grow but it is a sad fact that most closed systems contain very little natural zooplankton - often due to the aggressive nature of our filtration systems and protein skimmers, in the wild zooplankton makes up the highest level of protein in the water column and as a result it is easy to see how it becomes filtered out.

Rotifers: Tiny creatures around 100-300 microns in size that feed on the macro algae present in the water column, these important little fella\'s are often the food of choice for fish fry in breeding programs and with very good reason, they reproduce quickly and contain high levels of nutrition - all that macro algae gut-loads the rotifer for extra goodness.

Copepods: Another tiny creature and one we hear the most about, copepods are found everywhere in the ocean and are gobbled up by loads of fussy eaters such as seahorses, pipefish, mandarins and themselves feed on a wide variety of nutriment found in seawater, from bacteria and diatoms to macroalgae and even each other!
